In 1910, the International Women’s Conference was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, where Clara Zetkin, a German women’s rights leader, proposed the idea of an annual Women’s Day to promote equal rights for women. The idea received unanimous approval, and on March 19, 1911, Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland observed the first International Women's Day.
