Elon Musk he's a physicist, engineer, entrepreneur, and billionaire with a plan to construct a completely self-sustaining city on Mars. After an asteroid blows up and destroys the Earth, Musk sees that as the only way to safeguard humanity on Earth as well. His plan is to build an enormous domed city on Mars where he and the citizens of Earth can live and work. He's constructing a new rocket and spacecraft in order to accomplish this.

His vision seems to be a bit of science fiction, but Musk has very real resources in his line of work.

As an engineer, Musk has helped design some of the best rockets in the world. The more detailed a rocket's design, the more efficient the rocket's ability to get off the planet. Thus, the larger and more powerful the rocket, the more payload can get off the planet. A very advanced and efficient rocket will be able to get off Mars and provide a very long-lived city. Musk believes that he can build a rocket powerful enough to provide such a city.

 Most of the technical details of Musk's plan are still very murky. Although the technical details seem impressive, it is likely that Musk is only attempting a very wild vision that could eventually become a reality. Personally, I'm not certain that the world is ready for such an adventure. As an engineer, Musk is probably only doing some well-crafted guesswork.

Elon Musk is only trying to educate the public on his vision, but he is not recommending that the world actually build a new city on Mars. Even if the world eventually builds a new city on Mars, building such a city seems very daunting. It's only a matter of time before the details of Musk's plan become more visible.

Many scientists are wary of such a project. However, it's unlikely that these scientists understand the amount of resources required to build such a city.

Nevertheless, if this particular vision becomes a reality, it would certainly be a great boon for the scientific community.

In 2001, Musk joined the Mars Society, a non-profit organization. He was inspired by plans to set up a plant nursery on Mars and also discussed funding for the project himself.
