Satyavan was the son of a blind king. Defeated by the enemy, the king was living in the forest with his queen and son. Since Lord Narada knew that Satyavana's life was only one year, he advised Savitri not to marry him. But Savitri did not accept it. She married this short-lived Satyavan. After that, she started living in the forest with Satyavan and his mother and father started serving them. This is how their world was going on happily.

A year was coming to an end. She fasted for three days and fasted Savitri before Satyavana's death. When Satyavan went to cut wood in the forest, Savitri also went with him to the forest. Satyavan was cutting wood and Savitri was collecting it. Breaking the wood, he suddenly felt dizzy and fell to the ground. At that time, Yamaraj came there and he took Satyavan's(prana) life with him Savitri started following Yamaraj with her husband. Yama repeatedly asked Savitri to go back. But Savitri flatly refused and insisted on going with her husband. Eventually, Yama got bored and he offers three boons to Savitri. she asked for her husband's Kingdom and her mother-in-law to restore the eyes and to have a Child. When Yamaraj said Tathastu inadvertently,

Yamaraj remembered the promise and had to give back the life of Satyavan. As Savitri regained Satyavana's life under the Vada tree, Women(Suvasini) are completes this vow by worshiping the (Vatvaruksha) Banyan Tree.
