May 1st is the founding day of the State of Maharashtra. On the same day in 1960, the Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated the Independent state of Maharashtra. The historical, cultural and social heritage of Maharashtra is very large. 106 martyrs who gave their lives for the formation of Maharashtra state are commemorated on this day.

May 1st is also known as International Labor Day. The State Reconstruction Commission refused to give Mumbai to Maharashtra, angering the Marathi people, causing tension in the area around the Flora Fountain on November 21, 1956. This decision was met with opposition in small meetings all over the country. To protest the Government, the Union planned to hold a large protest march in front of the Flora Fountain.

That after this, a large crowd gathered at the Flora Fountain, with people from both Churchgate station and Bori Bunder shouting slogans. To disperse the crowd, the police force was lathi-charged from the front. However the police efforts failed, and the then-Chief Minister of Mumbai, Morarji Desai, instructed police firing. There was gunfire in the Battle of United Maharashtra, and 106 protesters were killed. From the establishment of the National Assembly till the Independence of the country and even after that, Maharashtra has participated in every constructive initiative of the country.

Maharashtra is the land of saints, mahants, sages and sages as well as the land of knights. This land has a tradition of heroism, sacrifice and patriotism.

 Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj followed all religions. Hindvi Swarajya, established the kingdom of the People(ryots) Inspired by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and many patriots like Vasudev Balwant Phadke, Umaji Naik, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Lokmanya Tilak, Swatantryaveer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Rajguru and Nana Patil from Maharashtra started a war against the British. He endured hardships and tortures. He did not even care about the lives.

                While dreaming of the Independence of the country, the leaders, intellectuals, writers and journalists came up with the idea of ​​uniting the Marathi speaking regions to make the bilingual state a powerful state.               Maharashtra Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm mainly in the state of Maharashtra. Many governmental, entertainment, and traditional events and activities are organized on this day. 

On this day, people pay homage to great people like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. Government holidays are given to schools and colleges. Schools organize events and competitions such as essay writing, speech competitions, debate competitions, one-act plays, plays, powada's singing, painting competitions.

 People wish each other a happy Maharashtra Day by sending SMS, songs, Videos, quotes, Images, Wallpapers to each other using internet and social media. 

Villages and towns are decorated with banners wishing happy Maharashtra Day. In many places, patriotic songs are played on loudspeakers on the occasion of Maharashtra Day

 Maharashtra Day is celebrated with enthusiasm in all schools and colleges in the state of Maharashtra. Many competitions and events are organized in schools on this day. Below are some examples of such competitions and events.  You can also organize these competitions in your school.

Ø Cultural events

 Cultural programs are organized on the occasion of Maharashtra Day. These include singing competitions, powada's singing, dance competitions, one-act plays, plays. Schools, students and student committees can work together to celebrate these events.

Through these events, students learn about the rich history of Maharashtra.

 Essay writing competitions are organized in schools.  The topics of the essay competition are based on the lives of patriotic, or important people in history.
