Bal
Gangadharpant Tilak was running his ancestral farm in Chikhalgaon in Dapoli

but when it became difficult to make a living from farming, he accepted a job as a Teacher with a
salary of Rs. 5 per month. He studied Sanskrit and Mathematics. His
mother's name was Parvati Bai and father's Name was Gangadhar. The original name Of Bal was Keshav.
However, everyone was saying the same thing as a Bal. Due to his sharp Intellect
and studious attitude, Gangadharpant trained him in Sanskrit and Mathematics. Then
Bal studied the subject with interest. From this, he started reading Sanskrit
texts and solving difficult arithmetic easily.
Lokmanya Tilak |
After primary education, Bal came to Pune. With his cleverness, Bal earned the love of the teachers here. From the very beginning of his school days, he was known for his sincerity, outspokenness, and resistance to injustice. After passing Class X in 1872, he obtained his B.A. from Deccan Colleges in 1876. Passed this degree exam. In 1879 he became an LLB. While in Deccan College, he got acquainted with Vishnushastri Chiplunkar and Gopalrao Agarkar. All three were patriots and freedom fighters. At that time, India was under British rule. The three agreed that the love of freedom should be created in the minds of Indians living in exile under this foreign power.
Works
He
founded the New English School in 1880, deciding to instill a
love of freedom in the minds of children from an early age.
Bal Lokmanya Tilak,
Vishnushastri Chiplunkar and Gopalrao Agarkar accepted the teaching profession
without turning to government jobs and big salaries. Tilak's interest in
Sanskrit and
Mathematics was put to good use in this teaching
profession. The feeling of patriotism was very strong in the minds of the
devotees of these three countries. Therefore, the work of a teacher should not
be limited to the school child only, but his thoughts should be conveyed to all
the society
Started Kesari and Maratha Newspapers
Bal
Gangadhar Tilak started Kesari and Maratha newspapers.
In the minds of the people, writing in these newspapers should increase the
loyalty to the homeland, and liberate it from the tyranny of foreigners, and
expose the injustice done to Indians;
That was the intention behind the newspaper.
In an Article published in the Newspaper
'Kesari', in 1882, a text was published which exposed the injustice in the
state of Kolhapur. And from that, the case simmered. They were
sued. Tilak and Agarkar were sentenced to 101 days in jail. After his release
from prison, Ferguson College was
started in Pune in 1885 on the initiative of Tilak-Agarkar. There they
started working as professors. Even then, his newspaper work was going on.
Later, Tilak had a disagreement with his colleagues in the college. And Tilak
broke the relationship with the college by running Kesari Patra himself. Later,
Tilak began to express his views on
social and political issues independently. Tilak's fearless, fierce, truthful
writing made Kesari popular.
After reading the article in 'Kesari', people's dissatisfaction with the
British monarchy began to grow. The
government began to fear Kesari and Tilak.
The
plague hit Pune in 1896-97. Even more than that, the injustice
done by the rights of the British government reached its climax. He was
eventually killed by an English officer. The government took the opportunity to
cite what Tilak wrote about all these and sent Tilak to prison. The result of
this government's action was reversed and Tilak became more popular. Tilak became the
leader of 'Lokmanya'. "Swarajya is
my birthright" and "I will get it," he said.
Lokmanya Tilak as a National leader
Lokmanya was on the one hand acting as a leader who created dissatisfaction
in the minds of the Lacs people about the British government. At the same time,
he continued his study of his favorite subjects. In order to bring all the
members of the society together and spread the word through lectures,
The
Shri Shivaji Fund Committee was established by Tilak to commemorate "Shiv
Jayanti," the anniversary of the birth of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the creator of the
Maratha Empire.
Lokmanya's popularity was growing. He was being referred to as a National leader, so the government was getting restless. The Government was looking for an opportunity to keep Tilak away from the people. On 12 May 1908, Tilak was charged with treason by the government for his article in Kesari. Tilak was sent out of India to Mandalay jail to serve a six-year sentence. But even there, Tilak, without worrying, calmly dared to write a big book like 'Gitarahasya'. It was during this time that his wife died. But Tilak quietly digested that grief. Indians were always dissatisfied with the British government and were called the 'father of discontent'. Many of his actions shook the government, sometimes through writing and sometimes through lectures.
