What is the difference between Shivaratri and Mahashivaratri?

"Shivaratri" is the day before the Crescent (new moon), the fourteenth day of every lunar month, or simply the darkest day of the month. In a year, there are 12 to 13 Shivaratri. Among all of these, one Shivaratri, which falls in the month of Magha in February-March, has the most spiritual dimension and is known as the "Mahashivaratri"

At this time, right before the equinox, the planet's centrifugal force acts in a unique way, and this force has an upward moment. The northern hemisphere of the globe is positioned in such a way on this night that there is a natural increase of energy in all living things, not just humans. This is a night when nature is driving us to reach the highest level of spirituality.

Because Hindus celebrate this night as "overcoming darkness and ignorance" in one's life and the world through Shiva, the festival includes keeping a "jaagaran," or even  vigilance and prayers. Fruits, leaves, sweets, and milk are offered to Shiva, and some people fast all day in conjunction with Vedic or tantric Shiva worship, while others do introspective Yoga.

Whatever the reason, we Indians don't mind filling our calendars with a slew of festivities, with this one being one of the most important. Maha Shivaratri is an annual Hindu festival dedicated to the god Shiva, and it is especially significant in the Shaivism Hinduism tradition. The Maha Shivaratri is a Hindu event that takes place at night, unlike most Hindu festivities that take place during the day. Moreover, unlike most Hindu festivals, which entail cultural exuberance, the Maha Shivaratri is a solemn occasion marked by meditation, fasting, Shiva prayer, self-study, social peace, and an all-night stay at Shiva temples.

The Importance of Maha Shivaratri 

This auspicious occurrence is related with a number of myths and beliefs. The Importance of Maha Shivaratri is described in various stories. It is said that on this day, Lord Shiva drank the Halahala poison formed during the Samudra manthan and When Lord Shiva consumed the poison, it reached his Throat after that saw it in his Throat, which bruised and turned blue, giving him the name Neel Kanth .This is the night, according to one Shaivism tale, that Shiva performed the cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and devastation. This cosmic dance is joined by the chanting of hymns, the reading of Shiva scriptures, and the chorus of devotees, who remember Shiva's presence everywhere. Another mythology claims that this is the night when Shiva and Parvati got married. According to another mythology, offering to Shiva icons such as the lingam is a yearly opportunity to apologise for previous crimes, re-establish a virtuous path, and thus achieve Mount Kailasha and freedom.

Maha Shivaratri is thus a very important day for Hindus all across the world, and it is celebrated with fervor. Lord Shiva's devotees are numerous in Central India. On the day of Maha Shivaratri, a massive assembly of devotees comes to offer prayers at the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, one of the most famous Shiva shrines. The event is also observed with religious enthusiasm at Tilwara Ghat in Jabalpur and the Math Temple in Jeonara, Seoni. The Annamalaiyar temple in Tiruvannamalai district in Tamil Nadu celebrates Maha Shivaratri with much pomp and ceremony.

Maha Shivaratri is a National holiday in Nepal, and it is celebrated in temples around the country, particularly in Pashupatinath Temple. Thousands of worshippers also flock to the neighbouring Shiva Shakti Peetham. All around the country, holy traditions are done. Shobha Yatra is organised in Punjab by various Hindu organizations in various towns. For Punjabi Hindus, it is a magnificent event. The Maha Shivaratri mela is conducted in Bhavnath, Gujarat, near Junagadh, where bathing in the Mrugi (Mrigi) kund is considered sacred. According to mythology, Lord Shiva personally bathes in Mrugi kund.
